There’s a new superhero in town, and Artbae CEO Cary Michael wants to tell the tale of the fictional character Sethemba with his artwork series Sethemba: Man of Tomorrow. The series aims to address the numerous social issues our nation is facing today in an exploratory, honest, yet culturally engaging manner. Each masterpiece of the series will feature Sethemba (Zulu word meaning “hope”) as a swallowtail butterfly who has been summoned to resolve various prominent issues of today such as social injustice, domestic violence, depression, acceptance and anxiety. Cary Michael says, “It is my ‘hope’ that viewers of my work can see Sethemba as a role model figure, view themselves in his shoes, and acquire a sense of joy and healing in the belief that our nation will soon be relieved from the recurring societal issues we continue to endure.”
Sethemba’s story will begin with a book distribution and painting event on World Autism Awareness/ International Children’s Books Day (April 2nd); an arts showcase featuring a sound bath, DJ, interactive art and local vendors on April 16th; an Earth Day campus clean-up on April 23rd ; and a guided art therapy painting session for National Crime Victims’ Rights Week on April 24th. The story will culminate with an exhibition of works detailing Sethemba’s inception and evolution on display from April 16th – April 30th.
